Tribute to Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh RIP

It was with deep sorrow that we, in St. Brigid’s GAA Club, heard of the death of long-time club member and staunch supporter, the legendary broadcaster Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh.

As the news of Mícheál’s passing spread, the heartfelt sadness and immediate outpouring of grief across the club truly testify to the high esteem in which he was held. His presence was a corner stone of our club for many years and his loss is deeply felt by all.

Mícheál was, without a doubt, one of the GAA’s greatest ambassadors. A gifted commentator, Gaeilgeoir, teacher and storyteller, he extolled the virtues of our Gaelic games in his own unique, humorous and beguiling way, wherever he went.

A proud Kerryman, Kerry football was always Mícheál’s first love but, without a doubt, St. Brigid’s came a very close second. Since he first arrived in Blanchardstown in 1972, Mícheál has been an active member of our community and club. He was heavily involved in the growth and development of St. Brigid’s. Alongside different executive teams, he played a pivotal role in planning, fundraising and delivering various stages of development to our facilities in Russell Park. Our clubhouse, our all-weather pitch and extended play areas are monuments to the achievements of those teams in which Mícheál was an anchor. His visits to the club were frequent, whether to support club teams, to organise social occasions or fundraising events or just to meet up with his wide circle of friends.  More recently, after his move to Kilcock, Mícheál would regularly return to Russell Park to see his grandchildren play.

While the final whistle has blown for Mícheál, his legacy lives on in the club to which he gave so much, over the years. His vision and commitment will continue to inspire and drive us, ensuring St. Brigid’s Club GAA Club continues to serve our community and members with distinction.

Ní bheidh á leithéid ann arís, cinnte.

On behalf of our club executive and members, I would like to extend our deepest sympathies to Mícheál’s wife, Helena, his children Éamonn, Niamh, Aonghus, Cormac, Neasa, Nuala, Éadaoin and Doireann, his extended family and his many neighbours and friends from Blanchardstown and Castleknock.

Funeral arrangement are detailed on Rip.ie

Chairperson of St. Brigid’s GAA
