CAMOGIE SENIOR 5 CHAMPIONSHIP SEMI-FINAL REPORT 2015-10-11 20:03:00

GALLANT SECOND HALF COMEBACK JUST COMES UP SHORT FOR BRIGIDS

Cuala 0-12 St Brigids 2-5

Despite a storming second half comeback, Brigids girls came up a point short in this championship semi-final played at Meadow Vale.

The home side had started brightly and were two points up after 90 seconds. A Katie Nyhan point settled the Russell Park girls but Cuala continued to dominate. Despite living off scraps, Brigids managed to keep in touch with another Nyhan point and two Niamh McCarthy frees to leave the score level at 4 points apiece after 25 minutes. However, Cuala then finished the half strongly scoring 5 unanswered points just before the break to leave them leading 0-9 to 0-4.

Brigids needs a good start to the second half and they got it when Ellie Hayden- just on as a sub - fired to the net. The intensity level was raised by both teams but scoring chances were at a premium. Two missed long range frees kept Brigids two points behind, before super-sub Hayden raised the green flag again to put Brigids ahead for the first time, midway through the second half. Cuala responded with a pointed free but a Mairead McCarthy free put Brigids ahead again coming into the last five minutes. Another free from the home side left the scores level. With ninety seconds remaining another Cuala free put the home side back in front. Try as they might, the Brigids girls couldn't get an equalising score leaving the margin a heartbreaking point.
