Supple and McCarthy Goals See Senior Footballers Past Maurs 2015-03-09 11:13:00

St Maurs 2-06 St Brigids 2-10

St Brigids Senior Footballers claimed their opening AFL 1 league points of the season following a 2-10 to 2-06 victory over St Maurs in Rush on Sunday morning. Played in blustery conditions throughout, the visitors started the game with wind advantage and scored 1-03 without reply inside the opening five minutes.

Brigids goal came courtesy of corner forward Lorcan McCarthy who finished to the net following fine approach play from Dublin Seniors Philly Ryan and Paddy Andrews. Indeed, Ryan and Andrews, fresh from lining out with the Dublin Footballers in Croke Park against Tyrone on Saturday evening, would prove a constant torn to the Maurs defence as they contributed four of six first half points with Eoin Maguire and McCarthy on form with the others.

Leading 1-06 to 0-03 just before half time, Brigids extended their advantage further from the penalty spot. Andrews was hauled down when through on goal and goalkeeper Shane Supple gleefully dispatched from 11 meters to give Brigids a 2-06 to 0-03 half time cushion. Maurs responded positively in the second half and opened with an early goal following a mix up in the Brigids back line. Brigids response was clinical, with three good scores all from play. Collie Carr, Cathal Doyle and Dublin U21 star Jack Mullins all kicked over fine scores with Mullins point the pick of the bunch. The young corner back started a move in his own full back line before finishing it off by kicking a good score from 25 yards into the wind.

Despite a late 1-03 from the home side, the visitors remained in control until the end with a late Andrews free sealing victory for the Russell Pk men, 2-10 to 2-06. Next up for Tony and the lads is Kilmacud Crokes in two weeks time.
