Junior C Hurling Championship - Round 1

St. Brigids 3-09 St Oliver Plunkett ER 1-15

A real local derby played in Russell Park last Friday night as the Group stages of the Junior Hurling Championship began. The home side were playing a team two divisions above them and when the visitors raced into a quick three point lead things looked ominous for Tim O Learys men. Moments later, Brigids Fergal Counihan took a pass from Ronan McKenna and crashed the ball to the back of the net to draw the game. Plunketts added two more points from their midfielder M. Malone before Brigids captain Alan Thyne added a point for the home side. Neal Plunkett hit a long range point for Brigids, leaving the half time score of 0-8 to 1-03 in favour of the visitors.

In the second half Brigids came out with all guns blazing and James O Reilly hit a lovely point to edge the home team even closer. The visitors then got a cracking goal and with the home sides defence now under pressure huge, Aaron Carolan and Oisin Kelly who later discovered that he was playing with a fractured finger, stood up and kept Plunketts at bay.

Vetern Ciaran O Reilly put his name on the scoreboard with a point, before Brigids goalkeeper was called upon to make two fine saves. A long clearance out of defence by Ciaran Dunne found Neal Plunkett who crashed the ball to the net before James O Reilly got a great goal to put Brigids 3 points ahead for the first time in the game. Fergal Counihan added a point for the home side, however the visitors added four unanswered points in the closing minutes to level the game.

Brigids midfield pair of Alan Thyne and Ronan McKenna were outstanding throughout the game, assisted by the superb Maurice Sweeney.
