Inter Hurlers Edge Past St Maurs in Tense Championship 1/4 Final 2014-08-14 19:24:00

Junior Hurling Championship Quarter Final

St Brigids 1-11 St Maurs 0-13

On Tuesday night Mickey O Sullivan and Donal Dohertys men had to fight to the very end to hold out against a very well drilled and organised St Maurs team to qualify for the Championship semi final. Brigids opened the scoring from a Kieran Sullivan free and the the rest of the half was more or less point for point with Brigids going in at the break leading 0-09 to 0-07. Luke Purtill claiming a nice point towards the end of the first half with Sullivans accuracy also impressive.

The second half was nip and tuck with some great defending from all of the six Brigids backs, withstanding huge pressure. After 41 minutes Brigids goaled from JP Costigan with a tidy finish after good work from Damien Fitzsimmons. This was soon followed up with a another Sullivan point following good work from Seamus Lynam and Mikey McDonnell. This put Brigids 5 points clear with 15 minutes to go but from here on in it was all the visitors. They threw everything at Brigids and with ten minutes to go they were awarded a penalty which Macdara Butler saved.

But again Maurs came back and with five minutes left the gap was back to a point but Luke Purtill pointed again followed great work by Sean Keegan and Joey Jordan. But again Maurs came again and pointed. Then in injury time Maurs were awarded a free from an acute angle to draw the game which just drifted wide. Well done to all involved they are now in the county semi final.
