Senior Hurlers Defeat Crumlin to Move Top of AHL2 League Table 2014-09-03 19:14:00

Crumlin 1-11 St Brigids 2-15

Our Senior Hurlers travelled to Pearse Park on Saturday evening for their top of the table clash with Crumlin knowing a tough encounter lay ahead. The lads also knew and that the winners would take a huge step towards automatic promotion back to AHL 1 for 2015 as just one round of league fixtures remains. The first half was a tight battle as expected with Brigids going in at half time one point to the good.

The lads struggled to settle as Crumlin seemed quicker to the breaks throughout the field. However, when David Smyth slipped in John O Loughlin for the first goal of the game, Brigids began to get moving. Daire Plunkett and Paul Winters both added points to give Brigids the half time lead, 0-08 to 0-07.

The second half began in the same vein with neither side particularly dominant until Crumlin were reduced to 14 men. Plunkett dropped back and played the spare mans role expertly. Paddy McAvinue and Winters shared the free taking duties with both getting vital scores to keep the score board ticking over.

It was Winters who effectively finished the game off after a well taken goal with about 10 minutes left, punishing a mistake in the Crumlin defence. Pat Rohan and Brendan Lyng got further points to put a gloss on the scoreboard. The match finished on a scoreline of 2-15 to 1-11 to St. Brigids.

The lads now face Faughs on September 13th at 4pm in O Toole Park in the final group game of the Championship, knowing victory will see them progress to the quarter finals. Their final league game against Setanta will be played later in September with the lads knowing that a win will seal the league title and AHL 1 hurling in 2015 after a one year absence.
