AHL4 Promotion Final 2016-12-06 19:37:00

St Brigids 4-14 Bray Emmett’s 2-15

St Brigids Intermediate hurlers added to a hugely positive 2 weeks for the hurling fraternity in Russell Park as they claimed promotion to AHL3 for 2017. Following on from the Senior Hurlers Cup final win and the Junior Hurlers league promotion last week, the Intermediates faced Wicklow Senior Hurling Champions Bray Emmett’s in the league final. The Wicklow club entered the Dublin leagues three years ago and claimed back-to-back promotions in 2015 and 2016. On Tuesday night, however, their promotion gallop fell at the final hurdle to a fine Brigids side.

A three goal scoring blitz midway through the first half proved the decisive period in the game. With the sides level at 0-02 each after 10 minutes goals from Dara Doyle, Pat Rohan and Cian O’Sullivan gave the Russell Park men a 3-06 to 0-07 half time advantage.

As expected Bray responded in the second half and had the margin back to three points, due in part to some superb free taking from their wing-forward. Indeed the gap could have been closer were it not for Tadhg Brannigan in the Brigids goal who pulled off a brilliant one V one save. Within 90 seconds of Brannigan’s save, the games decisive score arrived as Eoin Thynne rifled to the net after fine work from Sean O’Malley and Sean Keegan in the buildup. Thynne’s score restored the gap to 6 points and with Fergal Counihan now operating as a sweeper, Brigids attempted to close out the game. Further points from JP Costigan, Ciaran Kellet and Stephen Moore extended the home sides advantage and despite some frantic late Bray pressure, Brigids held on for a 4-14 to 2-15 victory.

The win see’s St Brigids now having 3 teams in Dublin’s 6 top divisions and starts the 2017 season on a high note.
