Great Team Win for St Brigid’s Handballers 2016-11-20 19:30:00

The St Brigid’s Junior team had a great win in the Leinster final against Kilkenny’s Winegap during the week. The scoring format for the inter-club competition requires a well balanced team as the first match is a singles over two 21 ace games, followed by a doubles over three 21 ace games and finally a concluding singles over two 21 ace games. The team with the most overall aces from the three matches wins.

First up for St Brigid’s was Jonny Westlake who divided the spoils over his two games with Jonny starting strongly winning the first game 21-13, but finding the going tough in the second which he lost 21-12. The St Brigid’s doubles team of Brian Gardiner and James Smith had an equally competitive  match. Losing their first game 9-21, the St Brigid’s duo changed tactics and turned the match around winning 21-9 in the second and again 21-9 in the third. The final match involving St Brigid’s Rob Farrelly was not in doubt throughout as he comfortably won both his games 21-10 and 21-13.

With a convincing victory on overall aces the St Brigid’s team became the Leinster Champions and now look forward to their All-Ireland semi-final. Great credit is due to the St Brigid’s team, including Ciaran McCallan who helped the team to get to the Leinster final but was unavailable for the final. His eligibility for the Junior grade was called into question due to his All-Ireland Masters winning exploits earlier in the year.

While St Brigid’s has had many singles and doubles handball successes over the years at all levels, it has been a long time indeed since the club had a team success so the win this year is all the sweeter for being a long time coming.

After a long and hard fought successful Leinster campaign we wish the team every success in their forthcoming All-Ireland semi-final.
