Juvenile Handball Update   05/02/2018

St Brigid’s Juvenile Handballers represent Dublin!

Following their victories in Dublin playoffs, a number of St Brigid’s young handballers represented Dublin in the first round of the Leinster 40x20 Handball Championships, which took place at the weekend. Juvenile handball throughout the province is extremely strong with the widespread growth of new facilities adding to already high standards and making inter-county matches very hard to win.

Dublin were drawn to play Laois in the first round. Patrick O’Donnell played in the U-12 singles and gave a very account of himself against his stronger Laois opponent, Donal Deegan. Throughout the two games he competed for every point and when he got the chance to serve he played some excellent rallies. While losing he gained valuable experience, which will stand to him in the future.

St Brigid’s other representatives competed in the U-15 singles and doubles and again found the going very tough. In the doubles, Conor Carolan and Tom Mohan came up against a very strong Laois pair in Jim O’Connor and Luke Dunphy. The Laois players showed their greater experience in doubles play by combining well to end some very long rallies. The Dublin pair earned many hand outs but were unable to score sufficiently heavy when serving to really trouble the Laois pair.

The final St Brigid’s player was Andrew Waldron who competed in the U-15 singles against Dylan Foyle from Laois. This match proved a real humdinger with both players excelling and maintaining a high standard throughout. Tough lung-bursting rallies entertained the spectators with both players trying to gain advantage. In the end the Laois player proved too strong but Andrew lost nothing in defeat.

The whole weekend can be considered, despite losses, an overall success for the young players involved, as it provided them with invaluable experience, showing them the strength of the players from other counties. Hopefully these inter-county matches will strengthen their competitiveness and we look forward to their further participation in future years.
